Two hurricanes, three weeks apart, almost the same landfall
Hurricane Frances came ashore on Hutchinson Island in early September 2004. Hurricane Jeanne followed on 25 September, making landfall near Stuart at the south end of Hutchinson Island β very nearly the same point Frances had struck weeks earlier. Together they caused the most extensive property damage and economic disruption in the regionβs recorded history. A large part of why Jeanne was so destructive is that the ground was already saturated: rain that would normally soak away had nowhere to go. It is the clearest illustration in Florida of why back-to-back storms are not simply twice one storm.
